Measurement is the process of obtaining the magnitude of a quantity, such as length or mass, relative to a unit of measurement, such as a meter or a kilogram. A measurement answers the general question, "how many?” as in how many miles, or millimeters, or gigahertz. As measurement is basically about counting, measurement is conducted in numbers and is quantitative, in comparison to other observations which may be made in words and are qualitative. The term measurement can also be used to refer to a specific result obtained from the measurement process. It is an important component in sports, more precisely in competitions.

{draw:frame} {draw:frame} Time measurement: Time is part of the measuring system used to sequence events, to compare the durations of events and the intervals between them, and to quantify the motions of objects. Time is measured with either analogue or digital stopwatches. Measuring time with these instruments introduces an error called the human reaction time which is unavoidable in sports competitions. The SI unit of time is minute. {draw:frame} Distance measurement: distance is a measure of the interval between two locations. The distance is the answer to the question, "How far is it from this to that or between this and that?"It is used, in sport, to measure track length, Length and width of pitches. A measuring tape is used for this purpose. The SI unit of length is meter. Speed measurement: Speed is change in distance with respect to time. Speed is a scalar rather than a vector quantity; example: the speed of a body tells one how fast the body is moving but not the direction of the motion. If during time t a body travels over a distance s, then the average speed of that body is equal to s/t. The speed and direction of a body's motion together determine the body's velocity....
