The Old Man and the Sea
I. Introduction
a. Quotation: “ a man can be destroyed but not defeated”
b. Motivation: I think a reader that enjoys stories about lessons should read this book.
c. Assertion: The purpose of this speech is to inform you about a great book and hopefully get you to read.
d. Preview: The struggle for the fish. And the lessons that are learned through this story.
II. Body
a.
i. Setting: The Sea.
ii. Point of view: My point of view is that this book was very compelling and interesting.
iii. Characterization: Santiago was the protagonist and the Sea was the antagonist.
iv. Plot Events: It begins with Santiago (the old man) not catching a fish for 84 straight days and his partner Manolin leaves his boat to go to a more successful boat. After that he caught big fish every day for 3 weeks straight.
b.
i. Major Conflict: The struggle between the old man and the marlin.
ii. Theme it develops: That it doesn’t matter if you make money off of the marlin or not. All that matters is that you catch it and succeed.
iii. Another conflict: The old man suffers cuts on his hands that almost prevent him from catching the fish.
iv. Theme it develops: Never give up.
III. Conclusion
a. I liked this book because it had a lot of life lessons in that were disguised by a fisherman’s struggle with a fish throughout the whole book.
b. The Old Man and the Sea is a great story that deals with perseverance and I encourage you to read it.
c. Like the old man said after the sharks at his marlin “ a man can be destroyed but not defeated”
