Teacher Guidelines:
The following guidelines are supplied to enable teachers to carry out valid and consistent assessment using this internal assessment resource.
Context/setting
This is an assignment on the theatre form mask. It requires students to consider some features of mask and how to use them to make their own short mask performance. Understandings about the form will be developed in a group context but demonstrated through individual skills and records.
Conditions
Class time allowed for the activity depends on the experience and size of the class but should include the following steps:
• researching mask forms from material or masks provided
• selecting a mask form for the story telling, and listing materials
• setting out the script and devising effects
• making the masks from pre-assembled plans and materials and time at home to finish.
• rehearsing and performing the story
Total class time 6 weeks.
This activity would be a useful introduction to the multiple tasks students will meet in performance work – director, performer, sound, lighting and scripting.
Resource requirements
For the masks themselves, depending on the style selected:
• Paper Mache foundations developed from an existing generic mask or formed from a facial mould.
• Basic costume clothing that is appropriate for the style of mask. Blacks are suitable as a substitute where specific costume requirements cannot be met.
