Abstract
"The interdependence of word and idea shows clearly that languages are not actually means of representing a truth already known, but rather of discovering the previously unknown." (Robert Lee Miller 1936: 46). As a convey of message, language is comparatively stable but also being developed. We live in a time when all the things are changing, including politics, economy, culture, science and so on. Every little change could bring many new matters and so as the language. Therefore, more and more neologisms have been found. On the other hand, large numbers of neologisms also reflect new things, new concepts and show us how out culture is evolving.
This paper presents a picture of the definitions, characteristics and classifications of neologisms, elaborates the significance and purpose of this study based upon a historical view of neologisms. In addition, the thesis also offers an exploration of sources of neologisms by demonstrating the major law of word-formation of neologisms.
