Sonnet 144 Analysis:
Two loves I have of comfort and despair,
Which like two spirits do suggest me still,
The better angel is a man right fair:
The worser spirit a woman coloured ill.
To win me soon to hell my female evil,
Tempteth my better angel from my sight,
And would corrupt my saint to be a devil:
Wooing his purity with her foul pride.
And whether that my angel be turn'd fiend,
Suspect I may yet not directly tell,
But being both from me both to each friend,
I guess one angel in an other's hell.
Yet this shall I ne'er know but live in doubt,
Till my bad angel fire my good one out.
FIRST QUATRAIN:
In the first quatrain of sonnet 144 Shakespeare describes his two loves. He describes his two loves. One of them brings him comfort and the other one despair. The better angel is the man who is beautiful and handsome, and the other angel is a woman who is very dark and is someone who causes pain in people’s life. In this poem, it is clear that Shakespeare prefers to be in the company of men than women. What I think about this poem is that the man and the women represent all the good and bad things about Shakespeare’s life.

Second Quatrain:
In the second quatrain, Shakespeare explains how the female will send him to hell since she is tempting the angel to join the dark side. He is also saying that she will corrupt the angel and corrupt his soul with her pride. What’s very interesting about this quatrain is that Shakespeare is explains how he blames all of the problems of the relationship between his male and female lovers on the female. He is insecure about his future. He is not sure if his good angel will turn into something bad and unpleasant. The reason why he might think this...
